Young children are remarkable in that they can recognise the number of things without counting. Developing from an early age, this immediate recognition of a number shown by dots is called subitising and leads to them linking the word and symbol.
The Counting Rainbow Peacock has brightly coloured removable feathers with dots on one side and the number on the reverse. The base rotates to reveal numbers from 1 to 10 and each time a number appears , the child can take the corresponding feather thereby associating the dots with the number symbol. Take all of the feathers out, mix them up and then put them all back again in the correct order or take a quiz to see if you can name all of the colours correctly.
